Miss Dove (Jennifer Jones) is a stern but highly respected teacher in Liberty Hills. When she has to go into the hospital for tests, she uses the time to reflect upon her life and her influence upon her students. Known as “the terrible Miss Dove” by certain townspeople, she comes across as completely humourless, outwardly, an unemotional old maid. Despite her demeaner, she is also remembered fondly by many ex-pupils, especially a young boy named William who grows up to become a cop (Chuck Connors), and her own Doctor (Robert Stack). Another, who as a young Jewish boy from an immigrant family, is initially bullied by his anti-semitic classmates and unable to speak or read English, is taken under the wings of “the Terrible” Miss Jones and goes on to become a famous playwright.
This is lovely heartwarming film, very much in the ilk of “It’s a Wonderful Life” and Directed by Henry Koster.
